The Chemical Engineering Department of the Faculté Polytechnique of the university of Mons (UMons), and in particular the BIOSYS Pôle, works on subjects related to biomedical and biochemical engineering, biotechnologies and environmental problems.

A specific competence was developed in biochemical systems with the production of specific (bio)molecules (vaccines, high-value compounds, pharmaceutical products), biogas and biofuels based on micro-algae cultures. Micro-organisms and biotechnological processes were also implemented in wastewater treatment. In this area, original experimental devices /set ups and new/specific analyses were developed. Modelling tools have also been established, including control and optimisation programs.

Another expertise of the group is in mass transfer during pollution reduction, such as in the adsorption of organic molecules on porous solids, catalytic destruction of VOCs, absorption of polluting solutes in a regenerable or reusable liquid phase, CO2 capture and storage (with the use of innovative solvents) etc. In these works, specific experiments were designed and reliable modelling methods were developed for the determination of parameters characterising the operation. For simulation and design purposes; gas-liquid, liquid-porous solid and gas-porous-solid applications were studied.
